The Medical Faculty of HHU awards the following academic degrees:

Dr.med.    Dr.med.dent. Dr.PH (Public Health) PhD in Medical Sciences

If you are interested in obtaining a doctoral degree from the Medical Faculty at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, you will find important information on the application procedure on the webpages of Graduiertenzentrum Medizin. General information on doctoral studies at HHU can be found on the webpages of JUNO.

Finding a research project and a supervisor

This will be your first and most important task. Of course, this can also be very tricky, since you will have to find and convince a supervisor to support you and your project.
In general, if you are planning a research stay at the Medical Faculty, please contact the respective institute/clinic directly. This is the best way to get first-hand information on open positions and potential funding. You will find a list of clinics and institutes on our homepage: www.uniklinik-duesseldorf.de.
The Graduiertenzentrum Medizin / Medical Faculty itself does not connect candidates with open positions. We also do not provide funding for PhD researchers.

Have you already found a topic and contacted your future research group? Excellent! There are still a number of things to take care of.

International university degrees – Which documents do I have to submit?

We will do the first preliminary check. For this check of equivalency, we will always need all of the following documents:

1) University Entrance Qualification (School Leaving Certificate): certificate, transcripts, supplements
2) Bachelor: certificate, transcripts, supplements
3) Master: certificate, transcripts, supplements
4) Form “Request for Recognition of International Degree”, completed and signed (form is available on request only)
5) Scientific CV

International university degrees – How do I have to submit my documents?

All certificates and transcripts/supplements must be submitted in an officially certified copy (consulate/embassy, citizen's office, notary's office; alternatively, copies can be shown together with the originals for verification purposes). Do not submit your precious originals!
Officially certified copies are only valid in paper form, not as electronic files.
All documents (certificates, transcripts, supplements) must be provided as certified translation into German or English by an accredited translator, together with the documents in the original language. English documents do not need to be translated into German.

International university degrees – Who is deciding on the equivalency of my degree?

Degrees awarded at foreign universities are recognised as equivalent in accordance with § 63a HG NRW. If there are no equivalence agreements, the Dean of the Medical Faculty decides on the equivalence of the educational degree. This is usually done by requesting an official statement by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für Ausländisches Bildungswesen, ZAB) in Bonn (http://anabin.kmk.org/service/kontakt.html).

Important Information on the official “Statement of Comparability for Foreign Higher Education Qualifications“ issued by ZAB

We will ask ZAB for a statement on the admission to doctoral studies (not on professional licensing or for evaluation of certificates). Please check with other offices (e.g. human resources department) whether this statement is sufficient in your specific case.

Please note that ZAB needs several weeks and sometimes even several months for the recognition of foreign higher education qualifications. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you contact Graduiertenzentrum Medizin well in advance (i.e. before applying for visa/entering the country).

You will find lists containing most foreign universities and degrees with information on their recognition in the ZAB database 'anabin': anabin.kmk.org/anabin-datenbank.html. Feel free to do some research on your own in their database.

Applicants from China, Vietnam, Mongolia

Please submit a valid APS certificate from the German Embassy and send the original certificate by regular mail to the medRSD office. (For more information cf.
